Intrepid Travel Discount

It’s enough of a surprise to run into an old friend in your hometown, but when it happens while you are overseas it seems impossible. Intrepid Travel co-founder Darrell Wade remembers such a moment, “I was working one evening, chatting via email to a colleague in Switzerland. I left work in Australia, flew to Beijing, was picked up by a friend at the airport and we went straight to the Wall to enjoy a beautiful spring morning. After a short walk I hear “Darrell?” I turned around and it was Ruth – the very same person from Switzerland I was emailing the night before. Turns out we both shut down our computers and went straight to the airport. Neither of us had even mentioned we were off travelling!”

Surprise meetings with old friends, or discovering that you have an unexpected connection with new friends, can be the unpredictable fun of travel. Throughout November Intrepid expects the unexpected with our new range of short break adventures.

Short break adventures are ideally suited to the free spirited adventurous independent traveller. Short breaks offer the freedom and flexibility of independent travel while removing the hassle of travelling on your own. To celebrate the launch of these new adventures, and our all new 2010 brochures, Intrepid Travel are offering a 10% discount to anyone that books a short break adventure in November.

Annoying things about staying in hotels

Top 10 things British Holiday Makers hate about hotels

Weary Brits are finally voicing their opinions on their hotel gripes. From cleaners barging in unannounced, to cold buffet food and greedy holidaymakers reserving sun loungers, is it any wonder self-catering holidays are on the rise?
The UK’s busiest holiday home website, holidaylettings.co.uk, which expects to be responsible for £300 million worth of holiday home rental bookings this year has released a survey about what is turning people off booking hotels.

The findings reveal that we have come to realise that lack of space and private facilities, having to get dressed for breakfast, and hearing your fellow guests ‘nookie’ noises in the room next door, is not the way to spend a holiday.
Instead, holidaymakers are opting for the increasingly popular self-catering holidays and making the most of the freedom a holiday home provides.

Ross Elder, managing director of holidaylettings.co.uk, says: “Brits have long been fans of the self-catering holiday, however, in the past 18 months the real benefits of the holiday home have come to the fore, with holidaymakers appreciating the value, space and flexibility this vacation delivers. Remember, you can’t swim naked in the hotel pool!”

Top 10 hotel gripes

  1. Lack of space and private facilities.
  2. Price – especially when there’s more than two of you.
  3. Astronomical mini bar prices.
  4. Cleaners ‘tidying up’ possessions when they should only be making the bed.
  5. Being able to hear the TV, screaming kids and ‘nookie’ in the room next door.
  6. Having to get washed and dressed for breakfast (and by a certain hour).
  7. Cleaners coming in unannounced.
  8. Knowing the best food is gone or has been sitting ‘warming’ for a long time if you turn up late for breakfast or the buffet dinner.
  9. People who ‘reserve’ sun loungers.
  10. Chintz.

No mention of expensive wi-fi in hotels then. At FlexHolidays.co.uk we certainly appreciate the space and privacy of a villa rental holiday but also have to admit to being a bit partial to excellent buffets on an all inclusive holiday. Then again it is nice to sample local restaurants – and if there is a big group travelling to a villa it’s sometimes fun when a different couple prepare dinner each night.

Three best road trips worldwide

1) Tasmania, Australia – One of my favourite places, Tasmania feels like a country in it’s own right. Something like a mix of Australia and New Zealand. Drive from Hobart along the coast to stunning Wineglass Bay. Followed by the Cradle Mountain National Park and then continue to Port Arthur. Tasmania is a great food and drink destiantion with some superb local organic food.

2) Route 66, from Chicago to Los Angeles the whole length of route 66 is around two and a half thousand miles but route 66 is more an idea than fact in this day and age as it is no longer recognised as a state highway.

3) Reykjavik to Akureyri – see the power of nature and some of the amazing range of geological features and landscapes Iceland offers visitors. Waterfalls, glaciers and a geyser are all on offer on this 200 mile journey.
